Is the MS-100 worth it?

Microsoft 365 is a business-essential program that includes Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Skype for Business and Windows as a Service (WaaS). Administrators are required to maintain these programs’ smooth operation. Administrator experts can oversee multiple programs and coordinate across many business services.
There are a few Associate-level certifications that correspond to key features of Microsoft 365 services. These certifications include:
Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate
Microsoft 365 Certified Security Administrator Associate
Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate
Microsoft 365 Certified: Teams Administrator Associate
Microsoft 365 Certified: Associate Identity and Access Administrator

This pathway requires at least one Associate cert to be eligible for the top: Microsoft 365 Certified Enterprise Administrator Expert.
What is the MS-100?
To earn the Microsoft 365 Certified Enterprise Administrator Expert certification, a candidate must pass the MS-100 exam. Its full title can be found at “MS-100 – Microsoft 365 Identity and Services – Skills Assessed” and it is paired with the second test, “MS-101 – Microsoft 365 Mobility and Security”.

Start training. Passing the MS-100 exam signifies that a candidate has a “working knowledge of Microsoft 365 workloads” as well as “networking, server admin and IT fundamentals such DNS, Active Directory and PowerShell.”
This knowledge base is not enough. The Microsoft 365 Certified Enterprise Administrator Expert certification shows that you are capable of “evaluating, planning and migrating, deploying, managing, and managing Microsoft 365 services.” Employers will be able to see that you have mastered several Microsoft 365 tenant management tasks at the enterprise level. These include compliance, security, and supporting technologies.
What is the MS-100 Exam?
The MS-100: Microsoft 365 Identity and Services – Skill Measured exam measures your abilities across four domains. It uses the following weighting:
Design and Implement Microsoft 365 Services: 25 – 30%
Manage User Identity and Roles: 25-30%
Manage Access and Authentication: 15 to 20%
Plan Office 365 Workloads & Applications: 25-30%

This material was updated on February 24, 2021. Notable changes include a decrease in the importance of Managing User Identity, Roles, and Managing Access and Authentication. Simultaneously the exam makeup doubled its importance for Planning Office 365 Workloads & Applications.
Each domain has a subset that will likely make up a significant portion of your work as a Microsoft 365 Certified Enterprise Administrator Expert. These are the changes since the MS-100: Microsoft 365 identity and services – Skills Measured exam. This shows the evolution of Microsoft 365 as well as how it is being used in business.
The overall weighting for the first domain, Design and Implement Microsoft 365 Services remained the same in each exam version. The major task areas have changed. The previous version was focused on lower-level responsibilities and primarily focused on managing existing features. As you can see, Microsoft 365 Certified Enterprise Administrator Experts take a more high-level view and have responsibilities that include:
Plan architecture
Install Microsoft 365 tenant
Configure Microsoft 365 tenancy or subscription
Manage Microsoft 365 subscriptions and tenant health
Plan migration of users/data

The exam version changed the emphasis on Manage User Identity Roles from 35 to 40 percent to 25-30 percent. Managing U has not been affected by this decrease.
